According to WHO, falsified medicines harm or kill patients, reduce trust in medications, drain health system resources, and promote antimicrobial resistance. MedSnap is a smartphone-based system that uses unique computer vision technology to evaluate the authenticity of solid oral medications. For testing, the MedSnap VR application allows the user to select the medication to be tested, hold the smartphone above a sample of tablets or capsules arranged on a vinyl Snap Surface, and automatically acquires a high-resolution image. Once nine tablet images are collected for each side, algorithms compute 24 features of visual appearance per side, and compare them to detailed statistical models of authentic medications. In a recent field evaluation in Vientiane, Laos, MedSnap was shown to be accurate, easy to use, and rapidly configurable to regional authentic medications. The system is scalable and appropriate for use in the clinic or pharmacy when medication non-response is encountered or suspected, and/or by regulatory or law enforcement personnel for the surveillance of medication authenticity.
